What are the implications of the African Union Data Policy Framework for South Sudan?

The AU Data Policy Framework provides a continental framework for data governance that includes principles of data sovereignty, data protection, and data-driven development. For South Sudan, the framework provides a basis for developing national health data governance policies that are aligned with continental standards. Key provisions relevant to health data include: the right of citizens to privacy and data protection; the obligation of governments to protect personal data; and the principle that data collected in Africa should benefit African countries and citizens.

SSHIA is monitoring the implementation of the AU Data Policy Framework and will provide guidance to members on its implications for health data governance in South Sudan. Members who are involved in health data governance policy development are encouraged to reference the AU framework in their work.
