How can health informatics support the response to non-communicable diseases in South Sudan?
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer are increasingly recognised as a significant health burden in South Sudan, alongside the traditional focus on infectious diseases. How can health informatics support the NCD response?

Health informatics can support the NCD response in several ways: integrating NCD data collection into the national health information system (DHIS2 currently has limited NCD modules); developing electronic health records that support chronic disease management; using data analytics to identify high-risk populations and target prevention interventions; and supporting the development of NCD registries for conditions like cancer and diabetes. SSHIA is advocating for the inclusion of NCD indicators in the national HMIS.
Mobile health tools have shown promise for NCD management in low-resource settings. SMS-based medication reminders, mobile blood pressure monitoring, and telemedicine consultations for NCD patients have been piloted in several African countries. SSHIA is exploring the potential for adapting these tools for the South Sudan context.
