What is the role of artificial intelligence in improving health outcomes in Africa?

Realistic near-term AI applications for South Sudan include: AI-assisted interpretation of medical images (chest X-rays for TB, malaria slide reading) which can extend the reach of specialist expertise to remote areas; predictive analytics for disease outbreak detection using DHIS2 data; and natural language processing for extracting structured data from clinical notes. These applications are already being piloted in similar settings in Africa.

The foundation for AI is high-quality, structured data. South Sudan needs to invest in strengthening its health information systems and data quality before AI can deliver its full potential. AI built on poor-quality data will produce poor-quality outputs. The priority should be getting the data foundations right.
