What is the potential of telemedicine for specialist care in South Sudan?
South Sudan has very few specialist doctors, most of whom are concentrated in Juba. How can telemedicine help extend specialist care to patients in remote areas?

Telemedicine has significant potential for extending specialist care in South Sudan. Teleconsultation services connecting rural health workers with specialists in Juba or internationally can improve the quality of care for patients who cannot travel. Teledermatology, teleradiology, and telecardiology are particularly promising applications because they rely on image sharing, which is feasible even with basic smartphones. Several NGOs are already piloting teleconsultation services in South Sudan.
The main barriers to telemedicine in South Sudan are connectivity, power supply, and the availability of specialists willing to provide remote consultations. SSHIA is working with the Ministry of Health to develop a national telemedicine framework that addresses these barriers and provides a regulatory basis for telemedicine practice in South Sudan. Members who are interested in contributing to telemedicine development are encouraged to join the SSHIA Digital Health Committee.
