What is the role of health informatics in improving maternal health outcomes in South Sudan?
South Sudan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world. I am interested in how health informatics interventions — such as electronic health records, mobile health tools, and data analytics — can contribute to reducing maternal deaths. What evidence exists and what is being done in South Sudan?

Data analytics can identify high-risk pregnancies earlier. By analysing patterns in ANC data, we can identify women who are at higher risk of complications and ensure they receive additional monitoring and care. This requires good data quality and trained staff who can interpret the data.
Electronic partographs — digital versions of the paper partograph used to monitor labour — have been shown to improve the quality of intrapartum care and reduce adverse outcomes. Some facilities in South Sudan are piloting these tools. The challenge is ensuring that midwives and nurses are trained to use them correctly.
