IDSR is a strategy developed by the WHO Regional Office for Africa (AFRO) to strengthen national disease surveillance systems. In South Sudan, IDSR covers 28 priority diseases and conditions including malaria, cholera, measles, meningitis, acute watery diarrhoea, and viral haemorrhagic fevers. Health facilities are required to report IDSR data weekly to county health departments, which aggregate and forward reports to state and national levels. The system enables rapid detection of outbreaks and triggers a coordinated response. IDSR data is entered into DHIS2 and is used by the Ministry of Health, WHO, and partners for outbreak monitoring and response planning.
Key IDSR reporting requirements for health facilities include: immediate notification (within 24 hours) of epidemic-prone diseases such as cholera, Ebola, and meningitis; weekly reporting of all 28 priority diseases; and monthly reporting of aggregate data. Health workers who understand IDSR requirements can ensure their facility contributes to the national disease surveillance system. SSHIA offers training on IDSR reporting as part of its Health Information Systems training.
